The lawyer stated that I am not being sued, but that my deposition is needed to defend her client.

A civil attorney can assist you in this matter. Ask the attorney who scheduled your deposition the general nature of the case which will help you to acquire representation.

I doubt you would need an attorney simply to attend a deposition and give testimony as a fact witness. You did not state what the underlying case is. If it is a scenario where you couldn't possibly have any legal fault, then I think you have very little to worry about, if anything. For example, if you were sitting at a red light with some other cars and observed a car accident happen in the intersection in front of you, you did not wrong hence there's no basis to sue you and your deposition testimony cannot be used against you. Even if you did theoretically have some liability, maybe the statute of limitations (typically 2-years) has already run and it is too late to sue you. It sounds like the attorney is extending the courtesy of trying to work out a date/time that is convenient for you. He could have just picked a date that suited him and had a process server serve you with a deposition subpoena. Not sure if you have been deposed before but it is definitely NOT fraught with tension and conflict like on the legal dramas you see on TV. The lawyer who requested your deposition will get to ask you questions first, then the opposing attorney(s) can ask you questions, and back again until they run out of questions. It is rare for a fact witness deposition to go longer than an hour. If you still feel you should have an attorney with you, any competent attorney who handles civil litigation and has taken or sat in on plenty of depositions should be able to represent you for a reasonable hourly rate.

In order to resolve a lawsuit, it is often very important to get the sworn testimony of fact witnesses. If a lawyer has gone out of their way to contact you regarding a lawsuit, that probably means you are a person with knowledge of relevant (important) facts. I agree with the other comments indicating that you shouldn't worry too much and that you should cooperate. Typically, witnesses do not need an attorney present at a deposition. Sometimes witnesses avoid talking to attorneys because they think they are in trouble. If they are an important witness, sometimes it is necessary to serve them with a subpoena. It is much easier to simply contact the attorney and schedule the deposition at your convenience. By providing truthful testimony, you will help everyone involved get the case resolved.

Based on what you have said you have some personal information of value for a defendant in a civil lawsuit. Hopefully the attorney told you what the case was about so you are not completely in the dark about what you are expected to testify about. You do not need legal representation to give your deposition unless you feel that someone may be eyeing you as a potential defendant in the case. To become generally familiar with what to expect in your deposition either Google it or call a personal injury attorney who should be willing to answer basic questions for you. Good luck.
