While going thru divorce, ex husbands family member died, one week before we finalized the divorce he purchased a house and paid cash for it, after screwing other beneficiaries out of what they should have gotten, including a charity. Should I have been entitled to half of that house?

Under Illinois law, an inheritance is not considered marital property. However, there are some exceptions that may apply. You would be best served by consulting with a probate attorney in your area.

I think this is a duplicate question, but in any event, I agree with Attorney Schening. Consult with a probate attorney in your local area.

Usually any property you inherit or any gift is not considered marital property, unless the person classifies it as such. More than likely, you would not be entitled to half of the house. Speak with your divorce attorney or a probate attorney.
