If i were to runaway from home or move out when im 17 are there any laws against it in the state of Iowa? Would my parents be able to call the cops and have me returned home against my consent? What if i have a job and am self sufficient, does that count for anything? What are my rights in this situation?

The age of consent in Iowa is 18. That means that you are your parents' responsibility until you are 18 years old. If a person under the age of 18 leaves their parents' home without parents' consent and the parents' are not in agreement with them leaving, they can be reported as a runaway and, upon being found, can be returned to their parents. Short answer is that you are a minor. Everything goes through your folks. You may want to speak with a family law attorney regarding the possibility of emancipation from your parents. I do not know the situation in which you currently find yourself, however, I would recommend contacting someone to discuss your concerns. An attorney will be able to explain your rights in your specific situation. Best of luck!
