This is neither a "violent crime" nor a criminal defense question; It is a personal injury question. If you want to increase your odds at getting a competent answer then you should re-post this question and list "personal injury" and not "violent crime" as a practice area. In fact, I will do this for you.... As an aside, you may wish to contact and apply for Florida's Crime Victim Compensation Fund (a link is provided below). I don't know if this will qualify but it might, and that may provide some relief while you wait out the civil lawsuit process (if there even is anything to collect in a civil courthouse.) Very sorry to hear about senseless act of violence and serious harm to your son. You may already be aware of restitution claims which may be part of criminal proceeding through prosecutor's office. This is sometimes a decent last choice option, and goes hand in hand with civil suit. Consider consult with experienced injury attorney in jurisdiction with the specifics of matter and for file review on rights, responsibilities and options moving forward. Liability and damages will of course have to be proved up as part of any claims, however, be aware that unless the defendant(s) had insurance (which insurer may deny coverage for intentional acts or crimes) or assets that can be located and attached = collection on damages may be an uphill battle. Click on "Find A Lawyer" tab above and you will be able to figure out best options. Good luck. Be well.

Yes you do. I'm very sorry to hear about your son's injury, it is very unfortunate. Meet with several local personal injury attorneys in your area, you can use the Find a Lawyer feature here on . Gather any medical records and police reports or anything else you may have and bring it with you when you meet with the attorneys to discuss your case. Be sure to start the search now and discuss statute of limitations issues - you did not say when this happened. Your son's injury will affect him for the rest of his life, our only form of justice is to try and make him whole. Best of luck to you and your son.
