How can I get a passport for my son if his father is absent and don't know his whereabouts? His name is on the birth certificate but haven't heard from him in years. I have no idea where to find him or contact him.

You are going to need an order of the judge of competent jurisdiction granting your sole custody of the child or ordering production of the passport, to accomplish that

Contact the passport office, tell them your situation, they will explain exactly what you'll need, which is a (family) court order, signed by a judge, affirming you have sole legal and physical custody of your son, due to the deadbeat dad being nowhere to be found. They will then, with pleasure, issue the passport for your minor son with only your signature on the application. Best wishes.

If you have special or exigent circumstances that will affect your son's swafety and/or welfare, then the Passport Office can waive the requirememnt that you son's father authrize issuance of a pasport. Otherwise, a court order is rrequired. Consult with an experienced immigration attorney who can reveiw the facts of teh case with you and recommend an appropriate course of action.
