The DOC will do nothing to handle the civil lawsuit, aside from complying with any orders to transport your grandson to court appearances or make video conferencing available to allow him to participate in the civil proceedings. Nor will the civil suit impact his sentence or boot camp eligibility. Your grandson has two options: ignore the civil suit and have a default judgment entered against him, or hire a civil attorney to mount a defense to the claims. There is no right to counsel in a civil suit, so there will not be one appointed or provided by the court, a lawyer would need to be hired. As he is incarcerated, someone outside will likely have to do the "leg work" to locate an attorney and provide the payment, but ultimately only your grandson can authorize the attorney to represent him. The criminal conviction will come into play in the civil suit, but a civil attorney in a private consultation after reviewing the allegations of the civil complaint against him can advise as to the potential financial exposure and the defenses available, if any, to reduce the damages. The Find a Lawyer feature above is a goo starting point to search for counsel, if you so desire.Good luck.
