Can you go to jail for not paying a supplemental judgment.

My wife took me to court on a remedial contempt for not servicing all the family debt I was ordered to pay in the first part of our divorce proceeding. She won a judgment of about $,6000 dollars and it was supposed to be paid immediately in full. I have to pay her $ 1,800 a month in support money and some added expenses because of the divorce. I have no more extra money, but I don't want to go to jail.
You cannot go to jail for being unable to pay a judgment. However, you can be jailed as a remedial measure for contempt of court - that is to say, if the Court finds that you have the ability to pay, and that you have willfully refused to do so, then the judge can order you put in jail until you agree to make the payment. This is an extraordinary remedy and very rarely ordered. More likely, your ex-wife will be able to use her judgment to garnish your wages and bank accounts until the debt is paid.
