Is it legal for my employer to remotely wipe clean my personally owned iPhone data when I leave company

I have a personally owned Iphone. I used it among other things to access my company email account. Apparently I did this through an Iphone hardware that has a version of Microsoft Exchange ActiveSynch included on my iphone hardware. This "program" was activated on my iphone when I connected to my company email and I learn later that it gives my company admin the ability to wipe clean my iphone- which they did when I was terminated. So I lost all of my personal pictures, contacts, etc - none of which look like they can be replaced since they were recent and not yet backed up on iTunes. This seems like blowing up my car because it had company files in it to me...

There is no simple answer to your question because this is an area of law which is constantly evolving to stay in step with technology. The first step in resolving the issue is to look at a copy of your old employer's handbook on the matter, but this is probably not specifically covered. There are a number of legal theories which could be used to file a claim against your former employer. After all you do have a right to privacy, and your analogy with the car is a very valid argument.
