Document to prove US citizenship when filing an I-130 form?

2 views 1 answers
Hi, I am going to file an I-130 form, and in the instructions there is one part called "What documents do you need to show that you are a US citizen". I pasted the instructions in the extra details part. Does this mean that I have to file BOTH copies of my passport and birth certificate, or can I just file a copy of my passport? I lost my birth certificate and it seems like it takes a while to get a new one. Thanks a lot for your help!

Go ahead and file using a copy of your US passport biographic page. That is normally enough. Occasionally, a zealous USCIS examiner will ask to see your birth certificate at the interview, but the passport is a primary proof. I always suggest that you go ahead and order a certified birth certificate now anyway as you may need it for many reasons in lilfe.
