Is there any way to find out if you have been sued or have judjements against you?

My husband and I are going to file bankruptcy, we have about $140,000 in unpaid debt from 2006-2007. We owned our own company and it went under at the end of 2007 beginning of 2008. Most of the debt though is personal. We had been moving for jobs and did not receive some of our mail, so we do not know if we have ever been sued or have any judjements against us. Thanks for the help.

Your bankruptcy attorney will likely pull a credit report as part of his due diligence obligations. The credit report may or may not reveal public records (like judgments), so you might be able to find out if you've been sued or have any judgments by consulting the records of your local county clerk. Depending on the law of your state, it might be worth checking all of the other county clerk records as well, since a creditor may have sued you in THEIR county. Your local attorney should be able to give further instruction in this regard. Best of luck!

I have on Avvo a legal guide for searching free or almost free court case information by county. The County of Riverside now charges a very small fee for name searches, but San Bernardino County is still free. You can get to my legal guide by going to my Avvo profile and listing the legal guides for this particular guide. Also, credit reports contain public records, such as judgments, bankruptcies, and foreclosures. You can get your free credit report without a sill subscription to a commercial service, thanks to Federal Law. The FTC's web site states: "You have the right to a free credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com or 877-322-8228, the ONLY authorized source under federal law."
