I am sorry that you are going through this, yes you should call him unless you are a criminal. if you are are criminal many times the police with use under cover stings to investigate. Absent that you really cannot avoid a process server if they want to serve you with divorce papers. Hope things work out. take care.

Assuming it was a constable or process server then they will eventually catch up with you to serve you. However you did not state in your recitation of the facts why you believe it to be a divorce lawyer, rather than some other type of litigation you might potentially be involved in. When you actually receive the petition make sure you read it carefully. If you don't understand what is going on within the papers then typically that is the point it makes sense to seek out an experienced family law attorney to represent your interests. Picking an attorney is a delicate matter so you should have several in mind and go on several initial consultations until you find one that you trust and believe will best be a zealous advocate for your position. Before you call him, call the ypsilanti circuit court clerk's office and ask them to look up your name in the computer to see if there are any suits pending against you. They should do this over the phone and then you can take surprise element out of this. If you find out that you are being sued (for divorce of anything else) ask for the case number. You can actually go to the court and ask them to make you a copy of the papers right there. The papers will not say if it is contested or not because the papers only show one side -- if you agree with whatever they say, that is called uncontested. If you would like different relief than what he asked for, it is contested, at least to that point. It is always a good idea to have an attorney represent you in a divorce, even if it ends up being uncontested. The other attorney might steam-roll you because you don't know the court rules and procedures.

Hi, The papers will normally be a complaint and summons seeking a divorce. I urge you to talk to an attorney who can review them with you and explain what your options are. At that point you can decide whether or not you need to hire an attorney to represent you and protect your interests, Good luck to you. Henry Gornbein

In my opinion, you should call the court officer and arrange to accept service. Failure to do so will hurt you legally in the long run and won't prevent the divorce from going forward. The sooner you get an attorney and get into the case, the sooner you have your rights protected.
