Your question lacks details, but I assume you are outside the US. In order to get a visa, you have to go to a US Consulate. Did your GC expire, or you just have been outside the country over a year? In any case, you have to show your ties to the US and that you did not intend to abandon your GC. Consult with an experienced attorney about proofs you may need.
If you are asking whether or not a lawyer is required to represent you in filing a returning resident visa request, the answer is no (a lawyer is not required). That said, reputable lawyers can be extremely helpful in bridging the gap from legal speak to lay person language and most lawyers know what evidence is relevant and should therefore be submitted. Better to have one than not.
