A California trustee has not filed a California trust tax return for twenty year or more. Recently, for the first time he filed a California trust tax return for the last five years. Will the Ca.lifornia Franchise Tax Board find out he hasn't filed for the prior years. Does the Board have the resources to trace back that far?

Yes. The FTB keeps records indefinitely. Whether the FTB will investigate all the prior years is up to the agency.

I agree wth my colleagues here. In addition, we've seen a substantial increase in the FTB's focus on collections. If the believe there's an opportunity to increase tax revenue then they'll likely try. Good luck.
