What happens if my parents claim me as dependent on their tax return?

I'm 24 years old, and have a job. I don't have good relationship with my parents. What will happen if I filed my tax return later than my parents did. And my parents claimed me as dependent on their tax return before I did?
Will the IRS amend my tax?
Unless you are a full-time student, your parents cannot claim you. Moreover, it is more likely that your parents' return would be audited. You have to claim yourself; your parents can only claim you if you do not file on your own (and you are a student).
What will happen is that the deduction by your parents will be disallowed and they will have to pay more. It will also slow down the processing of their tax return.
Your return won't be amended but you (and your parents) may receive a notice from the IRS. As my colleagues have noted, if this occurs then they may be required to provide proof that they're entitled to claim you on their return - which will be difficult since you're an adult and are claiming yourself.
Good luck.
I agree with my colleagues. A few questions though, did your parent's support you throughout the year; did you work. In some cases if your parents provided sufficient support for you then they may have a right to claim you as a dependant. It may be worth sitting down with a tax advisor for half an hour to look into this.
