Why does my traffic ticket read $5000 in property damage when there was none? And am I at fault?

I was leaving my job and stopped to turn north into northbound traffic (turning right) when an approaching bicyclist (on the sidewalk) came in the opposite direction (whom I did not see) and when I pressed the gas to turn I hit him and his bicycle, he actually hopped backward before he laid in middle of the road, no serious bodily injuries where present per paramedics and nothing was damaged except his bicycle but my traffic ticket states $5000 in property damage. Additionally the cop said I was at fault (failure to yield) because he was on the sidewalk but to even see traffic to turn right you have to be over the sidewalk, he took a chance assuming I would see him and dipped into the road to go in front of me, but I didnt see him and I hit him. Is this worth fighting in traffic court?

I would say you should consult a local attorney with a few more details. From your account of the situation above however, It would appear you "might" be able to deal with this with representation.

You'll want to speak with an attorney who handles traffic cases to discuss contesting the ticket and your options. You'll also want to notify your insurance company of the accident. Finally, keep in mind that the investitgation officer is estimating the damage; your insurance company should handle any property damage claim related to damage to the bike and likewise should defend your interest if a personal injury claim follows since often injuries may not be immediately apparent. Good luck.

I do not know why the officer wrote $5000 property damage on the ticket.I would contest the ticket since the cyclist was in violation of Florida Statues when he road upon the side walk in the wrong direction.
