The I-131 is an application for a travel permit, to allow you to re-enter the United States after travel, while your case is pending. You are not required to apply for this if you do not want to. You might consider applying, just in case of an emergency. I suggest that you consult with an experienced immigration attorney BEFORE you submit your applications, in order to have the best chance of success.

In addition to the information in the previous response, you mentioned that you plan to engage a lawyer to "look over your documents," but consulting with an attorney first may be much more efficient. There is no additional filing fee to include a Form I-131 Application for Advance Parole ("travel document"), and most immigraton law firms do not charge an additional fee for preparing this as part of an application package -- assuming that the applicant is eligible to file a Form I-131. Engagement of an immigration attorney may be less expensive than expected, and assuring that a case is properly handled from the very beginning may avoid delays and other costs (as well as other risks) in the future. As there is no extra fee charged for the I-131 the general practice is to include it in the I-485 package just in case an emergency comes up that requires one to travel. In regards to documents to evidence your good faith marriage once your employment authorization is approved assuming it is approved before your interview date, you would have an opportunity to get your SS Number and joint bank accounts, car insurance, utility bills etc in you name. As long as you gather sufficient documentation of your bonafide marriage prior to the interview, the fact that you did not provide everything at the initial filing should not effect your application. It is essential that you gather sufficient documentation of the bona fide nature of your marriage, it is not a good idea to go to an interview with just a marriage certificate, photos and affidavits unless you have children together. As fars as affidavits are concerned rather than the person giving the affidavit is crucial, affidavits from close relatives or persons of good standing/ credibility may be useful. Please consult with an attorney many provide an initial free consultation, get one and then at the very least pay an attorney on an hourly basis to review every thing before you send it out. That way as you would have done majority of the work you should be able to keep your attorney fees affordable.
