What do I do to keep creditors from calling to collect on debt I can no longer pay?

Income reduced by more than 1/2 and are no longer making payments to any credit cards. Having difficulty paying autos. Have considered bankruptcy, but, cannot afford the lawyer fees. Creditors are calling and threatening to sue..really panicing now. Is there any kind of help out there that doesn't cost as much?

If a debt collection agency is attempting to contact you, under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), you may request that the agency stop communicating with you over the phone or entirely. You may ask that they cease phone calls with you and that you wish to communicate in writing only. If they continue to contact you via phone, they are in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Or, you may write a "cease and desist" letter (via certified mail, return receipt requested) to the collection agency, terminating all communication. The agency will then have one more opportunity to contact you. If they continue to contact you, they are in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You should seek legal assistance to report any violation of the FDCPA. Keep in mind, this only works if it is a debt collection agency (a "third party creditor"), not the original creditor.
