After I marry my USC girlfriend, can I adjust my status from a F-1 student to a permanent resident as an immediate relative?

My US citizen girlfriend of 2 years and I plan on getting married. I also read that it's implied in a student visa that a student is expected to return to his/her home country. I originally intended to obtain my degrees here, but I met my girlfriend. I just want to make sure there'd be no problems when my girlfriend files for me after getting married. Can I have this process completed before my F-1/I-20 expires (graduation)?

From what you describe you should not have a problem with adjustment status after marriage to your girlfriend. However, it would be a very good idea for the two of you to set an appointment for a consultation with an immigration attorney so you can both understand what timing considerations there may be in marrying and maintaining your student status, and any travel you may want to do.

I agree with my colleague, you shouldn't have any problem adjusting your status, but I would consult with an immigration attorney.

You should be able to adjust your status after marrying a US citizen. Hire an attorney to help you guys to make sure it goes fast and smooth. Good luck!

Yes. Also, not a problem if the process is not completed before F1 expiration - so long as you ultimately get approved.

I have had students do that exact scenario. Also, what about OPT training, or graduate school? If that is an option, then see an experinced immigration attorney to look at the specifics of your situation. IF you need help locating someone to help you, please contact me.
