Getting HOB visa ? do we both need job offers first ?

My wife and I are British citizens and working in UK at the moment ? We are looking for jobs in USA . Our question is about the work permit . How hard is it getting the work permit H1B visa ? Is it always required that we must have a job offer first ? I have my experience in the field of sport for many years at a high level and my wife has a undergraduate degree from the USA in child psych , with hons . Many years ago she has , had offers for Uni in the U . S What is the route for our qualifications and experience ? is it a case of required job offers in our field of buisness for obtaining the H1B visa or in our case , another route possible ?
