A friend of mine owns coffee fields in Mexico and is interested in selling his beans in the United States. How difficult is it to start a company that imports coffee beans into the US from Mexico? Does it take a long time to get the permits/licenses? Is there a large initial investment? Thank you!
Setting up the company is "easy" There are no "import" licenses for coffee but you will need FDA approval. What a "large" investment is for this business is hard to say, but depending on the payment arrangements you have with your friend, probalby not to hard. The costs of roasting will of course depend on volume and who you use.
the most difficult aspect will be the volume of competition in the coffee business here in the US. I represent 2 coffee businesses and they have no lack of sources for their raw materials. Mexican source coffee is not currently particularly popular here in the US, but perhaps this could be changed.
This would not be my choice for a first venutre into business if you don't have prior business experience.
It will not take you long to establish an American company that imports products from outside the United States. If you friend wants to be a participant and is a foreign national, you'll probably want to use an Limited Liability Company. I'd recommend you speak to a California licensed Business Law attorney or better yet a Nevada Business Law attorney. Good Luck!

I agree with the others, it "shouldn't" take long, but if this is your first venture there will be growing pains. If you have the money, you would do well to find a consultant, attorney and CPA to help you get off the ground quickly, properly, and with the best chance to make money.
