You have 60 days to file your notice of appeal after sentencing. If the defendant is indigent, the California Appellate Project will do his appeal for him. They have some of the finest appellate lawyers in California.

In order to appeal his conviction, he must file a Notice of Appeal with the court in which he was convicted within 60 days of sentencing. In a case where the client was convicted by a jury of murder, his attorney will almost certainly do that on his behalf.
If he cannot afford to hire an attorney, an attorney will be appointed for him through the California Appellate Project (CAP). Appeals are long, difficult processes, and CAP has some very experienced lawyers.
One of America's most famous lawyers, President Abraham Lincoln, said "A lawyer's time and advice are his stock in trade." Like other professionals who have nothing to sell but their time and experience -- doctors, plumbers and mechanics, for instance -- most lawyers can't afford to give much of it away. Those who do provide some pro bono service usually do it through organized programs, not to random people who just call on the phone.
Please understand that this is a general discussion of legal principles by a California lawyer and does not create an attorney/client relationship. It's impossible to give detailed, accurate advice based on a few sentences on a website (and you shouldn't provide too much specific information about your legal matter on a public forum like , anyway). You should always seek advice from an attorney licensed in your jurisdiction who can give you an informed opinion after reviewing all of the relevant information.

I agree with attorney Marshall's answer and would add that you need to personally be prepared for your fiance to be incarcerated while the appeals go on for a long time. The appellate attorneys don't really have anyway to speed up the process.
