Can a cosigner of an loan (or lease) be held responsible for the liability (P&C) resulting from a negligent auto accident in NJ?

The driver of the car would be listed as the owner, or be named on the title, along with a financing company. The cosigner would have no interest in the vehicle as they are not on the title. This car would be purchased, registered and driven primarily in NJ. The primary driver would hold required, basic insurance and has a clean record.

I am not licensed in NJ, but generally liability arises either from the actions of the driver or by the title owner giving permission to another to drive. Doesn't sound like you did anything other than insure repayment of the loan for the vehicle. Another way to expose yourself to liability would be if you had signed for a minor to obtain their license.
