I received this from USCIS" We have placed your case on a processing hold because the required security checks remain pending. Until we receive the results of these security checks, we cannot move forward on your case. We require the results of security checks before we make a decision on any pending case. We cannot predict when we will receive the results of these security checks. Please be assured that we will make every effort to make a decision in your case as soon as the security checks are complete."

Nothing you can do. If it is in connection to a green card application, there is an internal memo from about 5-6 years ago, that there are time limits to this. If in connection to citizenship, then have to wait for checks to clear.

Given the number of verified prevented credible terrorist acts and activities in the United States, there is a compelling governmental interest to check any questionable or concerning applicants with "hits' on the records. Therefore, once initiated, there is no way to expedite that background check which must be completed. You may request your counsel to assess any applicable means of inquiries if you so choose.

As noted by my colleagues, there is no discernible method to have the security checks expedited. If this develops into a significantly lengthy delay, then you may wish to contact USCIS and then ultimately look at filing a Writ of Mandamus but that remedy would be only in the case of an excessive delay.

While I generally agree with my colleagues, I write only to say that if your FBI checks become UNREASONABLY delays you may bring a lawsuit in federal court asking the Judge to make a decision on your case and this almost always brings a about a decision in 2-4 months. But this is something I wouldn't even consider unless your I-485 has been delayed a year or more past normal processing times.
