My sister has pressed 3rd degree assault charges on my boyfriend what can I do about this?

My boyfriend & I were living together & got into a big fight so I called my sister for help getting my things. The cops were there the whole time. We were in our living room & I took his phone & had it in my left hand. When he jumped for it my sister thought he was attacking me & jumped on him so he spun around with his arm & put her in a head lock; she kept hitting him, he pulled her hair & I separated them & she hit him again. The cop didn't arrest anyone but she pressed charges the next day & she got a letter saying that charges will be filed against him. He is on probation right now & in the past had 2 charges for assault that were both dropped, how will this affect him & what can be done to stop it from happening? could she get in trouble if hes not guilty because of self defense?

There is a lot of discretion all the way through the process. The Police evidently didn't think it was worth arresting or citing anyone, the prosecutor will have discretion on whether to go forward or not (it sounds like they are). The judge will also have discretion on whether your boyfriend was acting in self defense or not. Right now, the state is cracking down on probation violations. He could get revoked and sent back to complete his sentence. If you guys plan on staying together, you need to be in counseling, and he needs to be in anger management. If your sister decided to drop the charges

First your friend should hire a criminal defense lawyer. With the messy facts and your testimony he is likely to have the charges dropped.
