How long does it take to obtain a marriage certificate?

Business Questions 4 views 2 answers
I need the marriage certificate for family based immigration. I want to get married in Los Angeles County (civil ceremony). But the Officer told me it will take 6 to 8 weeks till I receive a certified copy of the marriage certificate. I can not and don't wait so long because my visa will expire. Is there I way to get the marriage certificate right away after the civil ceremony or faster? Do I just get an informal version of the marriage certificate after the ceremony and is this enough to submit the visa application? Does the process go faster in other state or counties? Thank you very much for your help

Not to worry, that "officer" was a square head, but there was no way he/she could have known what is needed for filing an "adjustment of status" (AOS) marriage-based green card application. While true what the "officer" told you, to file for AOS all you need initially is to submit the "courtesy copy" marriage receipt you will be receiving on the day of your marriage. Nothing else. All you'll need to do after that is to make sure to bring the "certified copy of the "long-form" marriage certificate to your green card application interview to be scheduled in downtown L.A. within 6 months of your AOS application. Feeling better now?
