My future landlord wants a copy of my driver's license and my social security number. Does he have a right to ask for this?

The apartment is in a coop building. I had already filled out the application and provided a pay stub and a letter from my employer to verify that I'm working. On the application, I had provided my social security number and driver's license in addition to my credit score to the managing agent of the coop building. I had my identity stolen a few years ago and I don't feel comfortable with the landlord walking around with my personal information. Since I've provided all my personal information to the managing agent, why does the landlord feel that he has the right to demand this information from me. Does he have the right to not rent the apartment to me if I don't provide him with a copy of my social security number and driver's license?

So the way I understand it you provided the information to the managing agent but not the owner of the co-op. If you want to rent the owners co-op there is no law I know there prevents him from knowing this information. Ask the owner and the co-op managing agent how they protect this sensitive information. Explain the situation. Take notes and follow up if needed.

Absent some legally prohibited discrimination, he can rent the apartment to whomever he wishes. This was listed as a question in the tax law practice area. You might want to repost the question under landlord tenant or fair housing.

I think a landlord can ask for the information if there is a good faith basis for it.
