Do I need to pay three parking tickets I received from my college?

2 views 5 answers
I usually carpool with friends. I have 7:30 AM classes everyday and am late from time to time. On some days, I go by myself and purchase a single day parking ticket which I place on my dashboard to then run to class. I've never once seen a single slip of paper behind my window wipers and recently received two mails saying I owe two 45$ tickets to the school. By trying to appeal the tickets I find out there is a third one on top of the two they mailed.

Is this a public college or a private school? If it's a government-owned parking lot, failure to pay the ticket could prevent you from renewing your registration. If you don't pay the tickets in a timely manner, late fees could substantially increase the fine. If it's a private school, they may be able to add the tickets to your registration fees, or withhold your diploma,

Duh, you know what you did, I unfortunately have paid my fair share of parking tickets, you merely want to have a right to park when you are late. Boing, it is catching up with you.

Fight the tickets if you like. No good factual defenses come to mind. Nothing on the windshield? The problem with that defense is the fact that anyone can say that every time. Even when true, the system does not find it credible. Check to see if the purchase of the day pass is electronically recorded and saved. But in all events, do not ignore the tickets. Your campus police and parking authority are not "kiddie cops," they are the real deal under the laws of the State of CA. Ignoring the tickets from a campus is like ignoring the CHP's ticket for leaving your car n the side of the freeway. You are vulnerable to every bit of the same legal quagmire and cascade of penalties as with any other ignored ticket.

Fight the tickets in whatever way that is provided at your college. If you kept the day pass for the day you received a ticket obviously that would operate as a complete defense and as Ms. McCall suggests, you can attempt to obtain the school's records with regards to selling you the ticket on the days in question. Also if you paid by credit card, you can provide proof you paid those days. This may involve a significant amount of work but it may be worth your while if you can avoid paying all or some of your outstanding tickets. Yes, you have to pay and depending on when this was issued, your chance to challenge the tickets may have expired and you may well be approaching late fees and then potential DMV consequences.

You should fight this. Do you still have your 1 day parking passes? or did you pay by credit card, ie, and can show proof. Without delay, inquire into the school's internal process of contesting this, and get right on it. Don't delay so the fines don't start to increase, etc. Good luck.
