Can my husband still travel outside US within the 4mths till his GC expires w/out problems from immigration? Or does he need to renew already because he falls within the 6mths prior to expiration??? Pls. advise. Thank you!

File for renewal as soon as possible. When you have the notice of receipt of the application to renew schedule an InfoPass at uscis.gov and go to the nearest USCIS office. Take your passport and they will be able to put a stamp in it indicating your status. It is usually good for six months. He can travel with the stamp in his passport.

It all depends on the nature of the green card. If it is a CR card, you need to file for removal of conditions 90 days prior to the expiration of the card and then carry the I 797C receipt with you. If that is an LPR card, you need to file I90 and have his passport stamped on an infopass before traveling.
