I need to know if in order to file a lawsuit to obtain a judgment is there a minimum amount that needs to be owed first? Also how much filing a lawsuit would cost and if it's worth it.

You can sue for $800 in small claims court. The court filing fee is $80 and if you win you can have the judge order that it be paid by the losing party.

There is no minimum. Whether its "worth it" is up to you. If your a millionaire, spending $10,000.00 to collect $800.00 could be "worth it" to teach someone a lesson. If not, well...........

To add to Ms. Larkin's answer, you should consider whether you will be able to collect the debt if you obtain judgment against the other party, and whether it is worth your time and trouble to go after the person in court over $800.

Small claims court would be the proper arena. Whether or not it would be worth it for you or an attorney depends on the nature of the debt obligation and whether you had a written contract.
