From your VERY brief facts, sounds like there is currently only a CRIMINAL charge pending (assault on a female) but that you may be considering filing a Domestic Violence Protection Order. On this forum, we cannot specifically advise you to act a certain way or tell you definitive things about your case especially without a consult or an attorney-client representation relationship. But we can provide you legal information, education, and some guidance depending on the circumstances/question.
In a criminal matter, the District Attorney (prosecutor) is the attorney who works for the State and will be pursuing the charges against your ex, not you or an attorney you would hire. You are likely to be called as a key witness and some people want an attorney for support as well as to answer any legal questions that the DA may not be able to help you with since you are technically not your client.
Regarding a civil DVPO, the initial filing can and often does happen without an attorney because they have do it yourself forms at the court and fill in the blank mostly. So you save some fees there too. But it's usually best to have an attorney to handle the main case thereafter or at least appear at the actual hearing to try and obtain the best result and protection for you.
I agree with Ms. Morelos...follow her advice. You are not a Plaintiff, you are a witness for the Prosecution. If you want a protection order, you should file for a civil protection order.
