How to restore a drivers license after suspended due to DUI charges
Anonymous3 views3 answers
Hi,
My brother was arrested for his second DUI back in 2009. He was notified by PennDot (PA department of transportation) early 2010 that his drivers license was suspended for 18 months. He didn't appear to court but served about a week jail time in August 2013. He just completed 9 months of parole time and is looking to restore his drivers license and his life in general. The restoration requirements letter he received from Penn Dot lists all the steps he needs to take to restore his drivers license. At this point is it necessary to hire a lawyer to help him restore his drivers license or should he follow the steps stated on the restoration requirements letter retrieved from Penn Dot? Thank you for your help
P.S.He doesn't know English all that well
Sincerely,
A concerned sister
I agree with the recommendation that he follow the instructions on the restoration letter. Having someone with good command of the English language would be a big plus. Under normal circumstances I would not think an attorney needs to be involved, but the language barrier might change that.
The restoration process does not require an attorney, he can simply follow the steps on the restoration letter. However, if he does not understand a step due to the language barrier, he may need to seek the help of a translator and/or attorney to gain an understanding of what he needs to do. As a first step, however, I would inquire with PennDOT to see if it offers the restoration letter in your brother's native language, as they do have materials in Spanish. He may need assistance speaking with individuals on the phone to arrange for an interlock device, if PennDOT has required it, or to fulfill any other PennDOT requirements as well.
