Can my drivers license be suspended for driving on expired tags or suspended registration?

An expired tag charge will not suspend your license, but a suspended registration charge will. The prosecution has to be able to prove you knew your registration was suspended, and they usually cannot do this. When I was a prosecutor I only had 1 suspended registration charge where I could prove the person knew.

Your Georgia Drivers License can be SUSPENDED after a conviction for driving with a Suspended Registration, but not for an Expired Tag. I would advise you to get the Suspended Registration and Expired Tag issues resolved prior to your court date. That way you can show the prosecutor that the issues have been resolved and ask for a dismissal of the charges or a reduction of the charge to a non- spendable offense. If the prosecutor agrees - great, if not then hire an attorney that regularly practices traffic defense in that court. Practical advice on this type of charge - if you don't admit having actual knowledge of the vehicle's Suspended Registration the government will be forced to show proof of your actual knowledge of the vehicle's Suspended Registration. This is usually a hard thing for the government to prove and can be a reason for the government to negotiate a fair resolution to the charges. I hope this information has been helpful to you & Good Luck!! George McCranie www.MccranieLawFirm.com
