Can someone be fired for dying their hair?

A friend of mine was fired because she dyed her hair. There was not a rule against dying her hair. A week later they revised the rules but did not advise her about it and fired her. Can she do anything?

She should consult local employment counsel. The answer is unlikely. But there may be an extenuating circumstance that would allow her to take legal action.

Illinois is an at-will employment state. As such, your friend could be fired for no reason at all. Your friend should consult with an employment attorney, but it is unlikely she will receive any compensation other than unemployment unless she was contract employee.

Unless she had an employment or union contract that says otherwise, her employer can fire her for almost any reason, or even no reason at all. An exception would be if her termination was based on her membership in a protected class. One thing that is not clear is whether the rules to which you refer would be construed as an employment contract. She would need to consult with an employment law attorney to answer that question.
