married 1987, district of Columbia, spousal abuse, I have no information at all except have marriage liscense. spouse extremely abusive. what steps can I take. can I get a divorce without any information?
Where you were married is not relevant. You use for divorce in any state where jurisdiction is appropriate. You should sit down with a divorce lawyer in your state to discuss the facts.
There is no central database that would show who has divorced who in every state. You could contact Clerk's offices in the counties where you think he has been living to see if he ever filed. BUT- if he had gotten a divorce the odds are very high you would have been actually notified, although it is possible to do it without you knowing. Bottom line, if you were divorced you would have almost always been notified of a case being filed at some point, so you probably are still married. You can file yourself either way and get your own divorce here where you live, which I presume is Maryland
To add to Jeff's answer I would just state if you cannot confirm if he filed for divorce and you do not know where your husband lives you should retain an attorney as the process can be more complicated to obtain proper service of an individual whose location is unknown.
