Yes he can get in trouble. Where is the money? I trust she had a will as your brother is the executrix. Go to the probate court and ask for a hearing if you really want the bills paid. I would think that the creditors would have done so already. Contact an attorney who does probate in your area and ask for assistance.

Hello,
I have attached a link that explains the probate process in CT. It is recommended that you consult a local probate attorney to assist you in getting the Will probated ASAP before more assets are lost.
and the CT Bar Association can provide you with attorney referrals.
Good luck.
My condolences on your loss. Yes, your brother can get into trouble, but in trouble from whom? Several things come into play such as did your mother have a will or a trust? Exactly which bills? Who made the arrangements and signed the contracts for any funeral related expenses? Did your mother expect for her estate to pay for her funeral and bills? You should talk with an experienced attorney in your area, if you have a copy of your late mother's will or trust that would greatly help.
