I have never been in trouble before and i dunno what to do.. i screwed up and took some money from my work: however i admitted to it and payed some of it back... i still owe some more... they kept me in their company even after i admitted it, but they relocated me to a different store... but i couldnt afford the drive so i quit.... i have every intention of paying them back the rest but rumor has it they are going to press charges now.... can they even though they kept me in their company and what do i need to do?
The first thing you need to do is remain silent. That includes not talking about this to friends, family, or posting about it on the internet as the police may be able to use these statements against you as a confession. The next thing you need to do is go and immediately speak to an experienced criminal defence attorney in your area. The only person you should be speaking to about this matter is your attorney.
It looks like you could be charged with embezzlement or theft, or both. You will need to get a criminal defense attorney on your side if you are charged. Immediately is not too soon.
Yes, the could still press charges. The fact you weren't immediately fired does not mean a crime wasn't committed. What do you need to do now? You need to hire an attorney immediately to help you. The lawyer could perhaps work something out with your former employer and/or the police and/or the prosecuting attorney if it goes that far. Get a lawyer--it will make all the difference.
I would hire a criminal defense lawyer immediately to act as a buffer between you, your employer and the state. Perhaps your lawyer may be able to negotiate something with your employer to get their money back which might result in you not facing criminal charges. Have your lawyer do the work, that's what you pay them for.
