How long after signing a contract do I have to terminate it without paying a termination fee?

I recently joined a gym and was pressured to sign up for personal training. However, the personal training is extremely expensive and I don't feel I need it. I just signed the 3 month contract last night and was wondering if there was any grace period in regards to termination.

Check the terms of your personal training contract and see if it gives you specific instructions on how to cancel it and if so make sure you do exactly what it says to do right away and in particular within 3 days of receiving the contract. If it says nothing about cancellation, then immediately send the gym a notice in writing, signed by you, saying you are canceling the personal training contract, and send it certified mail return receipt requested. You could also bring the notice personally to the health club but cert. mail/RRR is better in my opinion because it gives you documentary proof that you canceled. If after taking these steps the health club tries to refuse to cancel the personal training contract, and does not refund you any money you paid up front for those services, then contact a consumer attorney.

Under New Jersey law, you generally have three days to cancel a health club services contract. The contract should contain a provision informing you that you have three days to cancel. There are, however, exceptions to this rule and based on the facts you provided it cannot be determined whether the three-day cancellation period applies. If you want more information you can check: http://www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/laws/HealthClu... or http://www.nj.gov/oag/newsreleases13/pr20130114... Make sure if you cancel that you do so in writing and that you keep proof of the cancellation.

There is no "cooling off period" for negotiated terms in a contract you signed. Always understand each term in the contract BEFORE you sign and I recommend that you have a lawyer review and advise you BEFORE not afterward. Good luck.
