What's the maximum time a person can sit without a court date?

My boyfriend has been in jail for 3 months on a level 1 felony, without a court date. He has been given his bond but isn't able to pay it. His lawyer won't answer the phone and he's just sitting. How long can they keep him for without doing anything? And how can his family help speed up the process?

If he can't make bond he will sit in jail until he is assigned a court date. This can take months, and possibly up to a year depending on which jurisdiction he is dealing with. The best thing you can do is bail him out.

A person can sit for years. For people without bail set, the state has to indict the charge within 90 days. But once bail is set, the clock stops. It is WORSE to have a bail set that you can't post than to have no bail at all. Since the lawyer isn't returning your calls, he/she is probably appointed. So you're getting all the attention you've paid for, which is zero. If you really want to help, HIRE a lawyer.
