Can the police charge me storage fees for a car when they are holding as evidence?

My daughter's car was impounded by the Sheriff's Department. She was not driving or even present in the vehicle. The driver was arrested for driving while suspended and later leg go. The passenger was let go from the scene. The vehicle was impounded and taken to the Sheriff's Department as evidence. That is all they would tell her when she called. She received a certified letter the other day saying it was at ABC towing. When she inquired with the towing company they told her she was being charged for storage. It was my understanding they had three days from the time it goes to the impound lot to notify the registered owner. Certified letter dated 10/13 would mean wasn't released from evidence until 10/10. How can they charge for time they had the car as evidence?

yes, reasonable impound fees can be assessed during an investigation - however, you could challenge them if they are prolonged or not reasonable

This isn't personal injury related. Potentially a collection issue.
