The visa number is generally understood to be the red number, some 8 or so digits, around the middle to bottom of the visa. It is not the control number. Since there is often widespread confusion and misunderstanding around this issue, I would recommend responding not only with the information, but with a good color photocopy of the visa itself. I offer no view or opinion on the process you are going through. For that, you should consult with an experienced immigration attorney. Scott D. Pollock Scott D. Pollock & Associates, P.C. 105 W. In what context did immigration send you this letter? When you say "immigration" do you mean USCIS? Is this a "Request for Evidence" on a pending application with a service center, or an application for a passport stamp with a U.S. embassy or consulate? "Visa Number" normally refers to the control number on the stamp laminated into the passport, visible on the upper right side. A Receipt Number or Case Number is a number USCIS assigns to a particular filing and will begin WAC, VSC, TSC, MSC or LIN and be followed by ten digits. An "A Number" is a file number specific to a person and is normally the letter "A" followed by eight or nine digits. It's hard to say here without knowing who is asking and in what context, but I think they might mean the Control Number.
