How do I defend against defamation in NC?
Anonymous5 views3 answers
A business manager of a farm is suing me for libel and slander, because I sent images and other documents to the absentee celebrity owners of the farm, and asked that they investigate the conditions there. I told the truth, and the lawsuit is probably an attempt to harass me. I seem to be not poor enough for legal aid, but not rich enough to pay for an attorney. I am very reluctant to try to represent myself against an opponent who has unlimited funds for legal aid. I don't know what to do next.
Truth is the ultimate defense to Slander and Libel so if you sent photos that were not doctored you likely have a great defense. Many lawyers in the region are willing to do free consultations. That should be your first step.

Truth is an absolute defense to defamation actions. You will likely need to hire an attorney. While I understand that your economic circumstances may limit your ability to retain counsel, you really should consult with an attorney and see if he/she can help or point you in the direction of an attorney who may be willing to take your case. Most importantly, you have a limited time to answer or respond to a lawsuit and you should be careful to protect your right to defend the claim by either making sure an Answer is filed or a motion to extend is filed before the initial deadline set forth in the summons.
