There is a contract. Should I have an attorney go with me to the station? I would really like to get an attorney to prepare a letter to the client arranging payment to him. I don't even know what type of attorney to call. Please advise

If the police are asking you to come down to the station to speak with you, then this is now deadly serious. It has moved from being just a civil matter to being a potential criminal matter. You need to speak with a criminal defense attorney immediately before you say anything to the police, and certainly before you ever set foot in the police station.

You probably need two attorneys: a criminal lawyer and one who does contract litigation.

Mr. Atchley is spot on. The police don't want to speak to you, they are looking to interrogate you, get you to say something incriminating, then arrest you. Consequently, any criminal defense attorney worth his/her salt would tell you to hire an experienced, Arizona-licensed attorney IMMEDIATELY. Because charges are not YET filed, such an attorney could still contact the other party to see if they'd accept some sort of payment arrangement. He/she would also contact the detective and tell him that you are NOT going to meet with them and that you are invoking your 5th Amendment-based right to remain silent and not incriminate yourself. In the meantime, you REALLY need to try and get that $27K together that you owe the other party. The stakes are incredibly high here. You are looking at a Class 2 felony Theft (and/or Fraudulent Schemes) offense, punishable by a significant amount of prison time.
