What costs will the state pay for if a defendant is declared indigent? Assuming a private attorney is hired murder felony

If one decides to switch from a PD to a private attorney, what costs would the state pick up? I realize they will not pay for attorney fees. I've contacted a few attorneys and would like to go with one that accepts a flat rate. I'm just concerned that there may be some hidden costs (experts, investigation, etc.). How much do these costs usually run in a murder case (average)?

First you need to answer if this is a capital case. In general, due process costs can be covered by the State for indigent clients. (Investigators/Service of Process/Court Reporters/Transcription/Interpreters/Expert Witnesses). Review the Justice Administrative Commission for specific details at: http://justiceadmin.org/faq/Q&A.pdf .

It is possible for a defendant with private counsel to request indigent status for costs, in fact it happens all the time. In these instances costs (what the State will pay) are fixed by the JAC (Justice Administrative Commission - see: http://www.justiceadmin.org/ ), services depend upon the unique facts a circumstances of the case and are limited to contracted vendors (of which there are plenty). In order to qualify the Defendant will have to make a financial disclosure and the source of the funds for legal fees will have to be disclosed. The Judge will conduct a hearing and make a ruling. Its that simple. I hope that I have been helpful in answering your question.

The court costs alone can run tens of thousands of dollars depending upon what needs to be done for you. In a murder case, it becomes extremely expensive right away.
