They said blah, blah, blah, and something horrible happens unless blah, blah, blah and don't you dare blah, blah, blah. It that pretty close to the script? Whether you talk to them again is a personal choice. If you engage the services of counsel, then they can only talk to counsel, not you. Not your work, not your parent, not your landlord, only your attorney. If of course they bother to even call the attorney once they are notified. If it is a real bottom feeder group, a letter from counsel sends them off to their next file in hopes that person is an easier mark for their tactics.

In most states, legal papers are delivered by ringing your doorbell and handing them to someone at the home. Most of the time, you would never have to sign for the legal papers. See your local rules of civil procedure for the details - Rule 4 most commonly describes the process in nearly all states. In many communities, court records are available online to anyone who wants to look for them, so you may want to go to your local court's website and search for your name. If it pops up with a case number and creditor name, you will know you need to find an attorney to represent you pronto. Avoiding a process server is stupid, but this call sounds like a lying liar to me. Hope this perspective helps!

There are a couple of things here to be wary of. First and foremost, if they won't provide you proof of debt or explain what the papers are, there may be something fishy going on. As one of the other responder stated, service of legal papers is usually done by having a process server or individual delivering the papers ring the doorbell and hand them to you. If you're not home, they can usually do something called drop-service, which means they'll leave a copy on your porch or by the door and mail a copy. (Drop-service doesn't work for certain types of legal documents that require personal service). In any event, no one can force you to sign something without explaining what you're signing for. I'm not sure you can be held in contempt for not agreeing to receive service of process, however, if you intentionally avoid proper service of documents, there's a chance it could hurt you in the long run, i.e. someone files a case against you, you avoid service of the pleadings and end up defaulting. Good luck.

It's a scam! Process servers never threaten to serve papers -- they just do it! Many of these scammer debt collection firms use words like "arbitration" and "litigation" in their names. Don't fall for it. Ask them to tell you their address so that you may write to them to request validation of the debt. Ask for their website. They won't tell you that info? Then, report them to the police and the OK Attorney General. If something makes you believe they are legit, contact a consumer attorney that practices FDCPA law.

As Mr. Wandres said, this is absolutely a scam. Please be aware that there are several unsavory groups out there who are always out to prey on individuals by engaging in this kind of behavior. The big hint for you is probably the use of the word "contempt." You can't be held in contempt unless you have previously received an order from a court to do a specific thing. If you haven't been sued or served, you are not obligated to perform any activity that could result in you being found in contempt. Threatening to serve papers on an individual is usually unproductive and if that was a party's intention they would've served you without warning. Furthermore, you have an absolute right to receive verification of the debt allegedly owed and collection calls should stop pending receipt of that verification. I would report future activities such as this to police.
