As a roommate not on a lease, does my daughter have to give 30 days notice before she moves out of the apartment?

My daughter is being threatened with a 30 day notice if she does not agree to the very sudden changes to the verbal agreement between her other two roommates and herself. She pays her rent and utilities on time and that is not an issue. She is being told that she must leave her space open so that one of her other roommates can have access to it, whether she is there or not. She has even offered to switch rooms with this roommate, who does not want to do that since they would have to pay more for that particular space. Naturally she is very uncomfortable with having this suddenly sprung on her after living there since mid September and is now looking for another space. Once she finds the new space, how much notice, if any, does she have to give her roommates?

Dear Mother of New York Roommate: Without a written agreement and no security deposit your daughter may move whenever she is ready. The tenant is allowed only one roommate so that is a big deal in favor of your daughter. Verbal agreements are worthless as your daughter now knows. She can do what she wants to do and does not need to do what she is told by the tenant and the problem of the landlocked roommate. They should be looking to make her happy to change the deal, but clearly do not care.
