Waiting for H1B Transfer, can I get my Drivers License renewed in the mean time?

I had a valid H1B for my previous employer, now that I have changed jobs and am waiting for my H1B transfer to the new employer (I have my receipt but not approval yet). Can I still renew my driver's license in the state of TN? Should I bring both - the approval notice for the previous H1B and receipt notice for the new employer with me?

You will only be able to do so if you are still in valid H-1B status, irrespective of which "employer" you currently work for. All you need to do is bring your passport and valid visa stamp & entry stamp on it, with the I-94 printed from the CBP's website. The fact that you have a "transfer" in progress is not relevant to proving you are currently in valid H-1B status in the USA.

Most likely not. The 'big' question is: "What did the company's immigration lawyer, not a NON-ATTORNEY in HR, say when you asked him/her this question?"

Assuming your previous employer has not withdrawn the approved H-1B, you should be able to use that for your driver license renewal. More and more States these days refuse to issue the renewal based on the receipt notice of the pending case.
