Your question requires more information, but here is a general answer. Yes they can charge you for the difference, but you ned to look at the estimate you received for the repair (Illinois requires there to be a written estimate). If the estimate amount if within ten percent of the actual amount they do not need to get your authorization before doing the repair. If it is within ten percent of the estimate amount then they can go ahead with it. Understand though that if the difference is in excess of this you have no right to demand the project be completed at the estimate level you merely have the right to refuse the repair after notice being given. There are a lot of statutes in regard to consumer rights and you should contact an attorney to discuss the specifics of your problem to determine whether the mechanic abided by the statute in your case. If the difference is less than a grand i would seriously think before consulting an attorney though as the amount of money may not be worth the expense of legal representation. A grand is not a hard figure mind you just make sure the possible benefits outweight the costs.

I want to amend my post to say that the estimate doesn't necessarily have to be written, i was think of a different statute in regard to home remodelling, but with cars the estimate can be given by telephone I believe. Though for the purpose of proof many mechanics do written estimates. Any other attorneys wanna clarify this aspect of auto repair law?
