My wife filed for a divorce. I cannot afford an attorney and do not want to cash in IRA's in order to pay for one.

Am I required to have one or can I represent myself in court hearings?

This is a complicated issue. You need to contact and hire a local attorney. Use the attorney locator and find an attorney who can provide better guidance after finding out more specific information. If you have any court orders, be sure to take that to your consult as well.

All human people have the right to represent themselves in court. I say human people because corporate "people" are required to have an attorney represent them. If you seriously don't have the money to hire an attorney, it is still recommended that you hire one. You may try to contact the Northwest Indiana Volunteer Attorneys, or, if the case is in Porter County you may try to contact the Civil Clinic at the Valparaiso University School of Law. Good luck!

You have an absolute right to represent yourself. You should read the materials on self representation that can be found at the Indiana Supreme Court Website. However, I caution you, if you do not do things correctly, it may cost you far more down the line than the expend for an attorney would now. This is especially true since you have I R A 's. Good luck.
