Miranda Rights only apply when a person is under a custody and under interrogation. Law enforcement can arrest a person and ask preliminary questions such as name and address, without having to advise a person of their Miranda Rights. The best answer is to retain an experienced attorney ASAP.
Sounds perfectly legal. Miranda is a rule of evidence not a get out of jail free card. Your friend needs to retain an experienced criminal defense attorney without delay.

Technically, they never have to read those rights. Miranda applies only to custodial interrogation. If the police don't want to ask you questions and use the answers in court, they need not Mirandize you.
