What does it mean by legible birth document
Anonymous2 views3 answers
Hello
I have filed for my sibling I-130 in 2011 and now UScis contacted me asking for legible copy of my birth certificate which I had already provided with forms initially. My Certificate is written by hand but it is in English and I just sent copy of it not notarized. What should I do any guidance?

"Legible" document simply means just that. Apparently your hand written birth certificate is illegible or not legible enough for USCIS. It is therefore your responsibility to respond to USCIS' request by asking the competent civil registry agency in your country of birth to issue a more legible, i.e. typewritten or printed copy.
Your certificate is probably hard to read and that is why USCIS requesting a more legible copy. You should request another copy of your birth certificate from the issuing authority of your country, and it should be in a typewritten format. Notarization is not a requirement. But legible format is.
Handwritten extracts from CIvil registries of Births are, fortunately, becoming less common. WHile they still are issued by some offices areound the world, it might be a worthwhile investment to contact the issuing agency for a new certified extract .Explain the reason and, even if still handwritten, at least it might be more legible. But do get moving on the request.
